WCF official MIXED DOUBLES Curling Rules:
The World Curling Federation is pleased that the first World Curling Championship for Mixed Doubles, with 29 participating teams will take place in Vierumaki, Finland in March 2008. This document has been prepared to assist the Member Associations in understanding the rules for this new event.
Rule clarifications are in BLUE. Original documented rules are in BLACK.
A Mixed Doubles team consists of two players (one male and one female).
Alternate or extra players are not allowed at Championships. Once an event has started, if a player becomes sick or injured, the team must forfeit any game(s) when they cannot have two athletes playing.
One (1) coach will be allowed for each team. This means the total team configuration will be three persons (1 female athlete, 1 male athlete, and 1 coach).
Rules:
1. Scoring is the same as in regular curling.
The ‘stationary’ stones that are placed at the beginning of each end are eligible to be counted in the scoring. Therefore, the maximum points that a team could count in one end would be six.
2. Each game will consist of eight ends. If at the completion of the scheduled ends the score is tied, play shall continue for the extra ends required to determine the winning team.
A minimum of 6 ends must be completed in every game.
3. Each team shall receive 48 minutes of playing time for an eight-end game. When extra ends are required, the clocks will be reset, and each team shall receive 6 minutes of playing time for each extra end.
The pauses between ends will basically be the same as described in Rules of Competition:
- 1 minute pause between each regular end
- 7 minute pause after the 4th end (meeting with the coach allowed)
- 3 minute pause before the start of the first extra end (meeting with the coach allowed)
- 1 minute pause between any additional extra ends
The Game Timing will be controlled the same as other WCF competitions
The Team Time-Outs will be controlled the same as other WCF competitions. This allows for two 60 second time-outs during each 8 end game, and one 60 second time-out in each extra end, when time clocks are used.
4. Each team shall deliver five stones per end. The player delivering his/her team’s first stone of the end must also deliver his/her team’s last stone of that end. The other team member shall deliver the team’s second, third and fourth stones for that end. The player delivering the first stone can change from end to end.
The delivery rotation is determined by the team at the start of each end.
5. No stone, including those in the house, can be removed from play prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end. If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced to their original position by the non-offending team.
Both stationary stones (the one in the house and the one in front of the house) are included in this ruling. It is the 4th delivered stone of each end that is allowed to remove any stone from play.
Example: Team A’s 1st stone cannot be a takeout on any stone, team B’s 1st stone cannot be a takeout on any stone, Team A’s 2nd stone cannot be a takeout on any stone, Team B’s 2nd stone can now be a takeout and remove any stone from play.
6. Prior to the start of every end, one team shall instruct the game umpire to place their team’s stationary stone (1), and their opponent’s stationary stone (1), in either position A or B:
A - A stone bisecting the centre line, midway between the hog line and the front of the house;
B - A stone on the back half of the button, bisecting the centre line and touching the tee line.
Depending on the ice conditions the placement of the “A” stationary stone in front of the house can vary. If the ice is very ‘straight’ the stone can be closer to the hog line, if the ice is very ‘swingy’ the stone can be closer to the house.
The decision on the exact placement can change from game to game, but must be decided by the Chief Umpire (in consultation with the Chief Ice Technician) before the start of the pre-game practice and cannot be altered during a game.
The maximum distance that this stone can be adjusted from the position described in the WCF rule book is 0.914 m. (3 feet) – this distance is measured from the edge of the stone that would be placed in the normal position, to closest edge of the stone placed in the new position.
7. The team having the decision on the placement of the stationary stones shall be:
Unless predetermined, the teams opposing each other in the game shall use a coin toss to determine which team has the decision in the first end.
Following the first end, the team that lost the end will have the decision on the placement.
If an end is blanked, the team that did not deliver the last stone in that end shall have the decision on placement in the next end.
To bring rule 7 & 9 in line with all other WCF competitions: it will be indicated on the official draw schedule the team having the first pre-game practice. At the conclusion of each practice, one player will deliver a stone to the tee (Draw Shot Distance). The team with the better DSD will have the choice of placement of the stones for the first end.
To keep the games running at a reasonable pace, the team that has the decision on the placement of their stone in position A or B, must tell the umpire their decision within 30 seconds of the completion of an end. So the stones can be placed, and the proper clock time started at the conclusion of the 60 second pause between ends.
8. The team whose stationary stone is placed in the position in front of the house shall deliver first in that end, and the team whose stationary stone is placed in the house shall deliver the second stone of that end.
9. Prior to the start of every game at WCF competitions, each team shall be allowed a 5 minute warm-up period on the rink on which they will be playing. The team delivering the last stone in the first end shall practice first.
The teams will each have 5 minute practice, but the order of practicing is explained in the clarification for rule 7.
Sweeping Clarification: one player delivers the stone and the other player must be positioned inside the hog line, and on the ice surface of the playing end, while the team is in the process of delivery. After delivery, either or both players may sweep the stone. This applies during all shots, including Draw Shot Challenge (DSC) and the Draw Shot Distance (DSD).
Draw Shot Challenge (DSC) Clarification: Each player will deliver only one stone (total of two stones) which will be used to determine the team’s DSC distance.
